What to Expect During a Dental Filling Procedure: A Step-by-Step Guide

For many people, even the thought of a dental filling can cause anxiety and nervousness. At Clubhouse Pediatric Dentistry, we take every measure to guide children through dental fillings to reduce anxiety and ensure they are as comfortable as possible. We have been providing state-of-the-art dental fillings across Rexburg, Idaho Falls, ID, and Jackson Hole, WY, for years!

Step 1: The Numbing Process: If a numbing agent is required, our first step with a dental filling is to numb the area around the tooth.  Doctor Jackson uses every technique possible to keep children calm and comfortable during their entire appointment.  Encouragement, distractions, injections, “happy air,” and/or laser therapy are just a few of the tools Doctor Jackson uses or offers to keep your child comfortable and at ease.

Step 2: Prepping the Tooth: Once the area around the tooth is numb, we use dental instruments to gently remove any decay or damage from the tooth. We then clean the area and make sure the tooth is dry and ready for the filling!

Step 3: Applying the Filling: The filling material is applied after prepping the tooth. We use only high-quality, tooth-colored composite material designed to blend in with the natural tooth. This material is applied in layers and is hardened with a special blue light.

Step 4: Shaping and Polishing: Once the filling is in place, Doctor Jackson shapes and polishes it to look and feel like the natural tooth. We take extra time to ensure your child’s bite feels comfortable and their smile is its very best.

Step 5: Post-Procedure Care: After the filling procedure is complete, taking care of the new filling is essential. The following includes instructions on how to care for your child and the dental filling immediately following its placement and for the life of the filling.

  • Avoid food and especially avoid hot beverages for the first few hours after the procedure or until the numbness wears off, as they will be less sensitive to temperatures. Also, watch for lip biting.  Children are very curious and may not realize they are biting.
  • If your child experiences some discomfort, over-the-counter medicines such as ibuprofen will help keep them comfortable.  Please use all medicine as directed according to the package instructions.
  • Do not allow your child to chew or suck on hard and sticky candy, as they may damage the filling or even cause it to come loose!
  • Practice good oral hygiene, which includes brushing twice and flossing once every day.
  • Please follow any additional instructions we provide.
  • Attend any and all follow-up appointments.
  • Contact us immediately if you notice an increase in pain or swelling in the gums and/or face.
